June Guide

Ahh, June. One of the best, right? You aren’t yet sick of being uncomfortably sticky, you still treat a single ray of sunlight like the greatest thing to ever happen to humanity.

The money benefits of June are often weather related as well. The sun and warmth provide smart ways to get out and save more.

Yard Sales

That’s the name of the game in June. Warm weather brings weekends of lawns full of so much worthless junk it’ll make your head spin. Check out our article for a guide on getting the most benefit out of yard sales.

But be careful out there, kiddos. Nothing sinks smart money minds faster than thinking they are getting a good deal. It is the hubris of personal finance rockstars. It plays into our self-delusions.

Just because a crappy item sitting on someone’s lawn is 99% off doesn’t mean that 1% payment is justified. Especially when that item is looking at a 2-month lifespan before it is retired to your own attic or garage. Great, you paid them 1% to take their garbage off their hands for them. Not a bad investment for them.

However, sometimes even frugal individuals need to buy things. Yard sales are a great first stop. You really need a new dresser, because your clothes are hanging out on the bedroom floor? Check the house on the corner of Maple and Mayberry streets first. They might be getting rid of theirs. $15 bucks for solid pine that will do the job perfectly? That’s better than any flash sale site or holiday sale.

The real beauty of June is hosting your own yard sale.

Let’s do the math, shall we? Selling your stuff to your neighbors lets you:

  • declutter your life;
  • increase storage/living space in your home;
  • make money; and
  • gives you the feeling of starting anew.

You can’t beat it. And we even have an article on how to not suck when you host your own yard sale. You’re welcome.
